Blog comments

I want to thank everyone who is submitting comments to my blog. Especially all those who commented on the corrupt people that tried to rip off my dads restaurant. I’m having a problem publishing them to the site, so for those emailing me about it – I’m not ignoring you, honestly!

Not much going on here, had some rain but nothing major. The RAM upgrade went well and my laptop is nice and smooth :D

RAM upgrade from my bf

So my boyfriend bought me 8GB of RAM for my Macbook pro. Dad bought me the laptop a couple of months ago and its powerful but I was running out of RAM now and then (I use multiple spaces and have a tonne of apps running at the same time). I didn’t know he was going to get me the RAM, I guess he just decided to do it because I was complaining about the laptop being a bit sluggish now and then.

I guess I should have got a hint when he was asking about a screenshot of my system info lol! But he said he was just comparing it to his own. I don’t know much about RAM but I have the box here and it says G.Skill DDR3-1333 for Mac, 4096MB x 2. Hopefully we’re going to install it tomorrow and I’ll see how much of a difference it makes. Since it’s doubling my RAM, it should make my laptop super fast again.

I noticed that since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, my 13″ Macbook pro seems to use more RAM, maybe this is like what they did with the iPhone, slowly introduce more bloat until the phone feels slow and you have no choice but to upgrade. I hope not, because this is the latest model of the MBP!

Is the world full of corruption?

Yesterday at the restaurant we had a small group of highly questionable people come in for a meal! As soon as they walked in and started acting shifty, I knew something was up and that this was going to be a long night. They made their orders without any fuss and I helped the head chef with the prep work and making sure everyone was doing what they should, just like any other night.

The food was served by Andrew and about a minute later there was shouting and banging from the table. Ugh, what a surprise, I thought to my self. I was imagining that they were going to complain that something wasn’t cooked right or that they never ordered what was delivered to them. But no, worse, they had a small cockroach on a napkin and they insisted it was in the dish.

We’ve never had a single cockroach in the whole restaurant, let alone in the kitchen area and there’s absolutely no way one could get mixed in with the dish. Not only that but our dishes are signature, meaning they’re relatively small and you’d certainly notice something like that when service a meal! I’ve read about such corruption going down at other food establishments and warned my dad what I thought was going on. It’s just straight up fraud and people like that shouldn’t get away with it, but unfortunately they usually do :(

The lengths some people will go to just to get a free meal is amazing. They’re certainly not welcome here anymore!

Sweet apple pie

So I just posted my best apple pie recipe on hubpages! It’s the one that includes vanilla ice cream and a dribble of caramel sauce.

There’s not much point in me reposting the whole recipe here, so go check it out and rate it highly for me. Since it’s a signature dish, I’ve added my name to it - Jennifer Abubakar Teves Apple pie. If you’re going to share this recipe with friends, please remember to give me credit.

One day I will operate my own restaurant and be a famous chef. So enjoy these recipes now because in future you’ll be paying for books with these in!

I got a new bed!

I’ve been nagging my dad for ages that I wanted a new bed, one with storage space underneath because I’m running out of room for all my books! The ones I were looking at online were all kinda expensive (like 3 months of my salary expensive!). So my dad said he’d make me a bed if i just gave him some examples of the ones I liked. I have to admit I was a bit hesitant, my dad isn’t exactly the best handy man in the world. But a bed is a bed :D

So I showed him some examples of what i wanted and the kind of storage boxes I wanted to use under the bed and we both went to the lumber yard and bought the wood. I’d always imagined that wood would be quite cheap but it’s really not! My bed will still end up costing about 25% of the price of a commercially made one. I guess that’s big savings but I just imagined it would be even cheaper!

My dad also had to buy power tools to use for creating the bed. I wonder if this whole exercise was just an excuse for him to get a bunch of new tools! He made the main frame of the bed and then cut the slats that would go across it. Sized up the legs so that the boxes can fit under and its all done. It took us (mostly him!) about 7 hours to prepare it all and put it together and I absolutely love it! Loads of storage space which means I can buy lots more stuff :D

Cheese and bean toasties

Sometimes it really is the simplest recipes and ideas that work the best. A lot of people turn their noses down at the idea of eating a toasty, especially paying markup for one at a cafe. It’s strange because those same people will happily pay huge markup on a panini which is essentially the same thing, it just has some different bread!

The great thing about toasties is that you can make a filling snack in about 3 minutes and the results are reproducible by just about anyone. You can get a fancy self cleaning and self cutting toasty maker for big money but to be honest it wont be that much different from the super cheap ones, they just offer some lardy dar frills.

All you need for this one is some bread, cheese (even cheap processed cheese will work well in a toasty) and some beans. Put a pile of beans in the middle of your bread, grate lots of cheese on top, put the other bit of bread on top and put it all in your toasty oven. A cheeky little delicious treat in just 3 minutes with basically no prep work!

Extra hours at the restaurant

Dad has let me do extra hours at the restaurant lately. There’s pros and cons. I get to spend more time playing with food and I actually get paid for it! But I’m really missing Josh, so that’s kind of a con :( At least we get to text all day now that he’s finally given in and bought a mobile phone! I’m sorry to my loyal readers who were used to me posting more often like when I was on blogspot. I will eventually get back to that point.

We had this really funny guy come in to the restaurant last week, making some really unusual food requests. He wanted penne arrabiata with ‘a dash of peanut butter’. And he was asking for this with a completely straight face, he really wanted it! I mean seriously, have you ever heard of such a strange request before? Of course we made the dish exactly as he requested.. I tried it and won’t be recommending it!

I do wonder if one day a customer will request something unusual that actually turns out to taste amazing and then I can share it on here. But so far the weird requests have led to nothing but fouled taste buds.
